Verona, 18 August 2026 — The ongoing research and public engagement activities of the Theoderic of Verona Research Group at the University of Verona have received financial support from the Regione del Veneto. The funding was awarded to the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures of the University of Verona for the initiative Teodorico da Verona: le radici dell’identità veneta tra territorio e memoria europea, led by Prof. Anna Cappellotto, within the regional programme supporting activities related to the historical and cultural heritage of the Veneto.
The initiative supports the Research Group’s ongoing work on Theoderic of Verona and the connections between the cultural memory of the city and the wider European traditions surrounding his historical and legendary figure. Combining research, cultural heritage and public engagement, the Group investigates how the memory of Theoderic has been transmitted and transformed across different periods, languages and cultural contexts, and how these traditions have interacted with the urban and cultural landscape of Verona.
The activities supported by the initiative build on work already carried out by the Research Group. This includes an international interdisciplinary conference, which brought together scholars from different fields to discuss the historical, literary and cultural reception of Theoderic. The scholarly results of the conference are also being prepared for publication.
A further strand of the initiative is currently under development: a digital application combining an interactive map with a thematic itinerary through Verona. The application will connect places associated with Theoderic and his reception with historical, literary and cultural materials, offering users a new way to explore the relationship between the city and the traditions that have shaped the memory of Theoderic over the centuries. The digital itinerary forms part of the Group’s broader commitment to making current research accessible beyond the academic community. By bringing together texts, places and digital resources, it will offer both residents and visitors an opportunity to encounter Verona’s Theoderic heritage while situating it within the broader European history of his reception.
The support of the Regione del Veneto contributes to the continuation and development of these activities, strengthening the dialogue between academic research, cultural heritage and public engagement and supporting new ways of communicating the results of research to a wider audience. The initiative is coordinated by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, University of Verona, under the direction of Principal Investigator Prof. Anna Cappellotto, with financial support from the Regione del Veneto.
